Balance.. (And its DISRUPTION)
We talk about environmental balance, which is the mightiest of the many “balances” that we see. Nature has taken millions of years to come to this stable position. It has taken man a couple of centuries to deteriorate it so much, but this time period is insignificant if you compare it with the former. And now when we are finally understanding the defects of our interference, we are trying to help restore it by sustainable development. It’s a good initiative, but here let me give you the big picture: Nature having much more advanced techniques that man has ever known, took thousands of years to create the balance, and we are endeavoring to rebuild it with inferior technology and still not sacrificing development. I don’t think we stand a chance! Moving back to balances, nature has ways to protect its balance too. Landslides, Earthquakes, floods, droughts, hurricanes and tornadoes are just a small list of its methods. My left brain (i.e. rational part of my brain) argues that it is due to our human activities that it has resulted in an upsurge of these events, but deep down, I think yes, it’s true, but not wholely. Actually, it is due to our activities that nature is enraged and trying to ensure balance in this world. Not just natural disasters, but I think even man-made disasters are a part of this whole restoration plan. Even stampedes, terrorism, wars etc. are playing a role in restoring the balance. You might think that these are causing destruction in nature itself, so how come these are helping in restoring it. The answer is, the imbalance is not just due to human activities, it is due to humans. Nature has designed a food chain, so that every species’ population remains under control. Herbivores eat grass, carnivores eat herbivores, bigger carnivores eat the smaller one and so on. Now humans have intensely disrupted this food chain, and this is the root cause of all of nature’s problems. Many think that poverty, under-development, lack of education are responsible for man’s sufferings. Even former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam thinks that poverty is main cause for Indian problems. But taking a look at the bigger picture, its an insignificant peck. This gigantic imbalance in population is nature’s problem. It just can’t sustain that, and it has irritated it like hell, the results of which are showing now. I hope its not tooo late, but it’s surely the time to act. Get out of your seat and plant a seed, or a garden if you are motivated enough. And please use a condom anytime you want to have sex (think of it like this, rather than nature acting upon you, you act for it. You help it by not having a baby, and not increasing population rather than nature giving you AIDS and killing you to reduce population! ;^)
